This resource guide, designed for use by New York City teachers, provides a wide range of suggested approaches and materials from which teachers can select as they teach the grade 7 and grade 8 course "United States and New York State History." The resource guide strives to include the histories, perspectives, and contributions of all people (women, African-Americans, American Indians, and ethnic minorities) and thus is in keeping with the social history approach prescribed by the State Syllabus for grades 7 and 8. Lee, Marcia M. (1991). SUNY Spring 1991 Student Opinion Survey. In spring 1991, students attending Westchester Community College in New York were surveyed regarding their sense of belonging at the campus. Students' responses, broken down into sub-groups on the basis of ethnic background, alien status, and sex, indicate the following: (1) the question receiving the highest percentage of "very satisfied" and "satisfied" responses was a broadly worded question about satisfaction with the college in general; (2) 65.6% of the students were satisfied or better with "faculty respect for students" (3) 64.9% were satisfied or better with "freedom from harassment on campus; (4) 58.4% were at least satisfied with "your sense of belonging on this campus" and "personal security/safety on this campus"; (5) the greatest area of discontent was over "the use of student fees," with almost 15% of the respondents indicating that they were "dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied"; (6)… [PDF]

This document contains ideas and information to assist community workers in coming to terms with the realities of ethnic diversity; to make a deliberate and positive commitment to multiculturalism; and, within a social-justice framework, to deliver programs and resources to young people in a way that genuinely accommodates such diversity. It is divided into four sections. The first three sections provide a framework for looking at the interaction of social justice and multiculturalism and provide background information to the debate about migration and culture. Mei, Dolores M.; Watson, Heriberto (1989). Magnet School Program, 1988-1989. End-of-Year Report. Evaluation Section Report. OREA Report. The magnet school program established during the 1988-89 school year by the New York City Board of Education in four high schools is evaluated in this summary report. Magnet schools were developed to achieve an integrated school system, with a focus on development of a curriculum that would attract various racial and ethnic groups. Increased student motivation was expected to contribute to achievement of the following program objectives: improved attendance; increased academic achievement; improved intergroup student relations; and increased positive school attitudes. Data collection involved analysis of aggregated attendance and grade advancement data and a survey of students in the program. Findings indicate that all four high schools attained or came close to attaining two of the three objectives. (1987). AFS Orientation Handbook: Volume VI. This manual is a resource guide for teachers and administrators and was compiled to provide direction for planning an effective orientation program. An in-depth design is given which will enable participants to derive maximum benefit from an intercultural experience. Each of the sections includes detailed instructions for the preparation of the program. One section describes the coping skills enhancement techniques that are taught to the participants. Another section concerns pre-departure counseling. Returnees are provided opportunities to talk with newly selected participants in order to alleviate apprehension.
