S√§fstr√∂m, Carl Anders (2022). Teaching Militant Humility against the Aggressions of a Neoliberal World. Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education, v43 n5 p686-701. This article develops a militant teaching humility regarding the foundational aggression and violence of a neoliberal worldview within late capitalism. Mainly the article shows how such aggressions and violence take shape as schooling the self-interested consumer within a school market. This article also shows how such self-interest understands education in terms of individualism, comparison, and competition, ultimately leading to the destruction of the social fabric of the common good of democracies. The teaching strategy identified highlights the humility and discipline needed to transform the aggression and violence of late capitalism into a non-violent but consistent strategy for democratization. The strategy developed in the article takes inspiration from Judith Butler, Jacques Ranci√®re and Thich Nhat Hanh, and exemplifies what democratization in education implies today. This article concludes with teaching understood as an ethical and political concern in being for the other,… [Direct]

(1999). Keeping the Peace in an Age of Conflict: Debating the U.S. Role. Public Policy Debate in the Classroom. Choices for the 21st Century Education Project. Revised Edition. [Student Guidebook and] Teacher's Resource Book. Since the end of the Cold War, the international community has been called upon with increasing frequency to intervene in the world's hot spots. The United States has taken up its share of responsibilities. Meanwhile, U.S. diplomats are busier too. Few crises arise in the international arena without drawing in the United States. A new set of foreign policy questions has emerged that citizens have only just begun to consider. This unit thrusts students into this new foreign policy frontier. On the first day the unit opens with a discussion of the concepts featured in part one of the background reading. The second day focuses attention on the forces that shaped the international community's role in conflict resolution during the Cold War. The third and fourth days of the lesson plan…

Jenkins, Charles R. (2003). Selected Legal Aspects of Academic Administrative Leadership: An Orientation for New Academic Administrators. New Directions for Higher Education, n124 p65-77 Win. An academic leader needs to have a basic understanding of the relevant constitutional and statutory provisions, evolving laws, and legal issues affecting higher education and the relationship between legal considerations and academic administration. At the same time, an academic leader must focus on accomplishing the goals, objectives, and highest ideals of the academy in teaching, scholarship, and service while incorporating the applicable legal considerations into policies, processes, procedures, practices, and decisions. Indeed, a close relationship exists between effective administration and developing and following policies, processes, procedures, and practices that are legally sound. One of the most effective means that an academic administrator may use to prevent or reduce legal problems is to continuously apply basic ethical principles of the profession, such as treating others as you would like to be treated; acting in good faith; being fair-minded, consistent, and… [Direct]

Dichter, Harriet; Sterman, Sara Vernon (1997). Use of Subsidized Child Care by Philadelphia Families: Findings and Discussion. The study examined the consequences of delay in enrollment in subsidized child care and the impact of funding on the choices and perceived opportunities of families once they begin receiving child care subsidies. Subjects were 106 working families in Philadelphia who are either using subsidized child care or who are waiting to enroll in the subsidized child care program. During the telephone interviews, 97.2 percent of respondents described themselves as sole providers, 51.9 percent reported having some college education, 81.1 percent were African-American, and 55 percent reported requesting or having care for only one child. Interviewed families reported that productivity at work was promoted through the child care subsidy program; parental peace of mind was greatly enhanced; and more funds were available to meet basic needs for food, shelter, and health care. Concerning the types and cost of care, respondents reported that center care is the most popular selection for both waiting… [PDF]

Milton, Sansom (2021). Higher Education and Sustainable Development Goal 16 in Fragile and Conflict-Affected Contexts. Higher Education: The International Journal of Higher Education Research, v81 n1 p89-108 Jan. Sustainable Development Goal 16 commits to 'promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels'. While the concerns of SDG16 with violence reduction, rule of law, and governance are relevant to all societies, this paper focuses on fragile and conflict-affected countries, many of which have the hardest task in achieving SDG16. It analyses how higher education can contribute towards–or detract from–SDG16 through teaching, research, governance, and external leadership. It then analyses four dynamics influencing the agency of universities in fragile and conflict-affected contexts in engaging with SDG16: resource mobilisation and the public good; securitisation; academic freedom, insecurity, and politicisation; and tensions between demands for localisation and the universalising logics of liberal peacebuilding models and the SDGs….
