Lehesvirta, Tuija (2004). Learning Processes in a Work Organization: From Individual to Collective and/or Vice Versa?. Journal of Workplace Learning, v16 n12 p92-100. The study investigates learning as knowledge-creation processes on individual and collective levels. The processes were examined in an ethnographic study, conducted in a metal industry company over a four-year period. The empirical study suggests that conflicts and crises experienced on individual level were some kind of incidental starting points for individual learning processes. Whether these processes continued to the collective level depended on how the individual learner or the collective recognised the significance of sharing knowledge as well as on opportunities, willingness and ability of individuals to share their experiences. It also depended on managers' understanding of learning processes whether opportunities for knowledge sharing were arranged and thus, whether learning at work was supported…. [Direct]

Munro, Penny; Wellington, David (1993). When Crisis Strikes: Strategies for Managing Student Grief. Schools in the Middle, v2 n3 p18-22 Spr. Educators can help resolve student grief over death of a student or staff member by giving accurate information, answering questions, sharing their feelings, and learning from the experience. Meeting with small groups of students after the incident may help them cope with their feelings. This article recommends a four-phase model employing crisis intervention and mutual aid techniques. Whalley, Margy (2007). Involving Parents in Their Children's Learning. Second Edition. SAGE Publications (CA) \Involving Parents in Their Children's Learning\ is the story of the pioneering work of the Pen Green Centre for children and families. Showing how early years practitioners can collaborate effectively with parents, the book includes case studies of parents and children who have attended the centre, studies which chart developments in learning for both children and parents. The book will inspire early years practitioners and offer them practical advice on ways of developing effective work with parents. Drawing on their work at the renowned Pen Green Centre, the authors show how to support parents as their child's first educator; provide practical and psychological support to parents; involve fathers and male carers; share important child development concepts; support and extend children's learning; and reach out to hard-to-reach parents. This New Edition follows up on the stories of people featured in the first edition, showing how they have progressed over the last few years. It… [Direct]

McGuire, Michael; Stevens, David (1998). Unit Record Versus Aggregate Data: Perspectives on Postsecondary Education, Data Collection, Retention, and Release. Final Report of the Working Group. The Steering Committee of the National Postsecondary Education Cooperative established a Unit Record versus Aggregate Data Working Group in 1996 to identify and assess data sharing methods that are needed to advance the understanding of how postsecondary students are served, and with what outcomes. Most mandated record sharing has been through aggregate data methodologies, but some members of the Working Group advocate more widespread development of unit record methodologies. This paper adopts a practical approach to the unit record versus aggregate data topic. It does not argue the universal superiority of unit records over aggregated data, or vice versa. Rather, it examines and evaluates both approaches and the issues that will need to be addressed. After an overview of aggregate data, which refers to data collected at the institutional rather than the unit (student) record level, chapter 2 identifies three stages of data handling that usually involve different responsible… [PDF]

Banados, Emerita; Jauregi, Kristi (2008). Virtual Interaction through Video-Web Communication: A Step towards Enriching and Internationalizing Language Learning Programs. ReCALL, v20 n2 p183-207 May. This paper describes an intercontinental project with the use of interactive tools, both synchronous and asynchronous, which was set up to internationalize academic learning of Spanish language and culture. The objective of this case study was to investigate whether video-web communication tools can contribute to enriching the quality of foreign language curricula, by facilitating a motivating virtual communication environment for purposeful interaction between non native and native speakers of Spanish to accomplish learning tasks. The project was carried out between a class of twenty Spanish as foreign language students from the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, and a class of twenty Chilean trainee Spanish teachers from the University of Concepcion, Chile. Students interacted weekly, over two months, in dyads and small groups making use of a video-web communication tool, "Adobe Connect." The video-web communication tool enabled synchronous interactions, during which… [Direct]

Knapp, Judith A.; Lemaire, Ingrid; Lowe, Sarah (2008). Collaborating on State-Level Institutional Research in New Hampshire: NH PAPER. New Directions for Institutional Research, n139 p47-58 Fall. In 2001, the grant and research coordinator of the Community College System of New Hampshire (CCSNH) was inspired to create an informal collaborative with representatives from other organizations who had similar interests in collecting and sharing data that related to postsecondary education aspirations and participation. Representatives were equally concerned at the time with the lack of consistent data on higher education within the state, as well as the need for more analytical work on important issues in higher education. The other original partners were representatives from the New Hampshire Department of Education (NHDOE), New Hampshire Postsecondary Education Commission (NHPEC), the New Hampshire Higher Education Assistance Foundation (NHHEAF) Network Organizations, and University System of New Hampshire (USNH). This collaborative became known as the New Hampshire Partnership for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education Research (NH PAPER), which has met monthly for nearly… [Direct]

(1991). Enhancing Access to Journal Literature. The libraries of the University of Maine System, Bates, Bowdoin, and Colby Colleges have installed integrated systems which are being linked electronically and are designed to promote the maximum sharing of library resources, thereby significantly enhancing the teaching and research capabilities of each institution. The institutions propose to take a new direction in information sharing among libraries via computer by jointly acquiring two standard periodical databases and sharing them electronically. This grant proposal requests support to provide access to subject periodical indexes via the linked systems, and regional and national access to the serial holding of the principal libraries. Funds will be used to purchase software and software licenses to load and index two online periodical indexes on the University of Maine System Library computer, and software to create online a Maine Union List of serial holdings information indexed by the databases from these and other Maine… [PDF]

Hatzakis, Tally; Lycett, Mark; Macredie, Robert; Martin, Valerie A. (2005). Cultivating Knowledge Sharing through the Relationship Management Maturity Model. Learning Organization, v12 n4 p340-354. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present the development of the relationship management maturity model (RMMM), the output of an initiative aimed at bridging the gap between business units and the IT organisation. It does this through improving and assessing knowledge sharing between business and IT staff in Finco, a large financial services organisation. Design/methodology/approach: The objectives were achieved by undertaking ethnographic research with the relationship managers (RMs) as they carried out their activities, and developing the RMMM by visualizing the development of a community of practice (CoP) between business and IT. Findings: The RMMM demonstrates a learning mechanism to bridge the business/IT gap through an interpretive approach to knowledge sharing by defining knowledge sharing processes between business and IT and defining the tasks of the relationship managers as facilitators of knowledge sharing. Research limitations/implications: More research is… [Direct]

Fisher, Steve (2002). The Power of Stories. Appalachian Journal, v29 n4 p421-25 Sum. A college professor uses Appalachian students' stories as a means of building community in the classroom and fusing the personal and theoretical. The sharing of stories helps students deconstruct outside definitions and stereotypes and enables them to take power over their own images and reinvent themselves. Once students accept themselves, they can accept the dignity and equality of others. (TD)…

Booth, Alan; And Others (1991). Social Integration and Divorce. Social Forces, v70 n1 p207-24 Sep. Longitudinal data on over 1,300 married persons suggest that divorce was deterred by absence of divorce in reference group (normative integration) and was deterred for shorter marriages by more friends and organizational affiliations (communicative integration). Sharing friends and organization affiliations with spouse (functional integration) may be only an extension of martial happiness, which reduces divorce rate. (36 references) (SV)…
