St. Maurice, Henry; Yudchitz, Amber (2003). Transforming Supervisory Grading: Accountability in Supervising and Evaluating Beginning Teachers. To study the ways that new ways of sharing responsibility for teacher quality affect grading discourses and practices, more than 900 surveys were collected from student/intern teachers and cooperating teachers and supervisors over a 9-year period. Opinions about pass/fail grading for student/intern teaching were tabulated and analyzed. Additional documentary material and a survey were also reviewed. Differences among participants reported attitudes and institutional practices are discussed. Analyses indicate that pass/fail grading is viewed in a positive light by a minority of respondents across types and programs and over time. In the 2002 survey, a majority of supervisors responding reported use of pass/fail grading and indicated support for rubrics and standards. Overall, secondary-level teachers and supervisors appeared to have slightly stronger preferences for grading systems traditionally used by colleges and universities. Martin, Susan K. (1976). Library Networks, 1976-77. Some 25 library networks in the United States now rely on computers for resource sharing. Library functions that best lend themselves to automated network operation include: cataloging, acquisitions, interlibrary loan, and reference. Progress over the last ten years in collecting and standardizing machine-readable data for library applications forms a basis for networking, but work remains to be done in this area. The oldest and largest of the networks, the Ohio College Library Center (OCLC), now has over 700 on-line users. Given the existence and extent of OCLC the new emphasis of the Library of Congress, a national network becomes conceivable. Gold, Ben K. (1975). Follow-up Study of Dental Hygiene Graduates, 1971-74. Research Study No. 75-5. Forty-seven (51.1 percent) of the 92 graduates of the Dental Hygiene program completed a questionnaire designed to provide feed-back information concerning activities of program graduates. Sugerman, Deborah (2002). Motivations of Elderhostel Participants in Outdoor Adventure Programs: A Life Cycle Perspective. A study examined the relationship between older adults' motivations to participate in outdoor adventure experiences and their retirement status. Surveys of 782 adults over 55 years old participating in 72 outdoor adventure programs found that although there were several significant differences in motivation based on retirement status, the overall motivations were similar for all participants and included being involved in nature, being physically active, being involved in a learning atmosphere, being with a group of respectful peers with similar interests, becoming competent in the program area, and resting and relaxing. Findings suggest that older adults may be using outdoor adventure activities as a means to prepare emotionally for retirement or to aid in the transition into retirement. Melville, Annette (1994). Resource Strategies in the 90s: Trends in ARL University Libraries. Occasional Paper 16. In 1992 the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) surveyed administrators in member libraries regarding resource strategies of the previous three years. This paper summarizes revenue activities, adaptive tactics, and budgetary practices reported by 87 Canadian, U.S. private, and U.S. public university libraries and establishes a baseline for comparing these factors. The period from 1990 to 1992 has been a difficult one for ARL members, with the largest reductions in public support experienced by public university libraries. All respondents sought outside revenues to supplement their campus allocations. Virtually every responding library had experienced some form of internal restructuring, and three of every five had eliminated positions over the three-year survey period. Supporting students in their studies, providing the resources to empower them to complete their education is a critical component in the quality and success of colleges. Legislation during the past three decades has gradually drawn Indian Health Service (IHS)-funded clinics into the mainstream of the US medical care environment. The Indian Self-Determination and Education Reform Act of 1973 and its Indian Education Amendments of 1984 began a movement away from federal management of health services to local tribal control of the more than five hundred facilities serving American Indians. At the same time the Indian Health Care Improvement Act granted authority to IHS-funded clinics to bill Medicaid, beginning a long and continuing negotiation among the tribes, states, IHS, and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Science fairs offer students the opportunity to develop skills in inquiry, writing research proposals, working with peers, verifying results, and sharing experimental findings. However, the science fair itself does not necessarily translate into a student's attainment of such skills. Project quality and a student's successful achievement of good inquiry skills vary greatly from fair to fair. Participation in a science fair should not be viewed as the \one shot\ opportunity for teachers to involve their students in inquiry, but rather it should provide both extensions and reinforcements to skills that were developed over time through a variety of classroom activities. Individual Participation in Organizational Information Commons: The Impact of Team Level Social Influence and Technology-Specific Competence. Human Communication Research, v31 n2 p212-240 Apr. This research extended earlier public goods research on individual incentives to use an organizational information commons that was based in Marwell and Oliver's (1993) collective action model. A revised theoretical model that incorporated team-level social influence and technology-specific competence was proposed. The model was tested using online survey data from 150 individuals in 13 work groups across 5 organizations. The research demonstrated that perceived team member behavior and technology-specific competence were positively related to individual use of intranets, over and above the collective level influences modeled in earlier research. The Minnesota Student Survey, including questions on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) virus transmission and sexual activity, was completed by approximately 88,000 6th-, 9th-, and 12th-graders during the 1988-89 school year. Sexual activity questions were not asked of sixth graders. Over 90% of high school students knew about sharing needles and sexual intercourse as means of AIDS transmission. Among sixth graders, 87% knew about needle sharing and 79% knew about sexual intercourse as means of transmission. Tibbitts, Felisa (1991). Private Sector Involvement in Vocational Education: A Survey of General and Program Advisory Committee Members. The Massachusetts Council on Vocational Education surveyed 500 members of business and industry in 125 program advisory committees regarding involvement in the Job Training Partnership Act. The purpose of the survey was to document private sector perspectives on the content and value of their participation on vocational-technical education committees. The rate of return was 36 percent; findings were based on 142 completed questionnaires. Findings showed over half had served on a vocational education committee for 3 years or longer. Over half served on committees affiliated with regional vocational-technical schools. In 8 of 24 activities, respondents had some significant involvement; many of those activities required review, planning, and information sharing. Egelston, Richard L. (1989). The New York State Model for Sharing Successful Programs: A Decade of Implementation and Evaluation. To address educational reform needs in New York State, the State Education Department developed a research-based Sharing Successful Practices (SSP) Dissemination model. Under SSP, a program successful in meeting one district's needs can be adopted by other districts with similar needs. SSP has four components: validation, demonstration, replication, and technical assistance. An evaluation of SSP must consider model characteristics as well as what happens after the model is implemented. In the report, several studies conducted over a period of years are synthesized to demonstrate that SSP is an effective tool in bringing about educational change. The report specifically shows that SSP has content and construct validity; is reliable and cost-effective; is more efficient than developing a local program; and is perceived as useful by local school districts. Context: Information technology (IT) has been identified as a potential tool for improving the safety of health care delivery. Purpose: To determine if there are significant differences between urban and rural community hospitals in the availability of selected IT functional applications and technological devices. Methods: A mailed survey of community hospitals in Georgia assessing the current availability of IT applications (54.6% response rate). Findings: Georgia hospitals reported having 63.6% of 56 possible functional applications computerized but only 52.9% of 41 technological devices. Swoyer, Vincent H. (1973). The Minicomputer as Support for Academic Computing Requirements. A Preliminary Look at Some Results of an NSF-Supported-Experiment to Evaluate Minicomputer Use. The National Science Foundation financed a project enabling 10 small, nonresearch colleges to purchase minicomputers for academic and administrative use. The purpose of the study was to determine whether an owned minicomputer is a better investment for such small colleges than a time-sharing system or a cooperative arrangement. The colleges purchased Digital, Hewlett-Packard, or Data General computers and support hardware and software. The project, which began in 1970, is not finished, but preliminary results indicate that there is a great preference for the minicomputers, and that they have provided satisfactory services for much lower cost. The college found that one full-time person's effort was needed to operate and sustain the systems and that the 16-bit word length is preferred over the 12-bit.
